Additional blood test charges for GMS patients
The General Medical Services (GMS) contract between GPs and the HSE is designed to cover acute medical care, and does not include routine or non-urgent blood tests. This position has been confirmed by both the Ombudsman and Information Commissioner, and the responsibility for providing such services lies with the HSE and Department of Health, typically via public hospital outpatient clinics.
To support patient convenience, some GP practices, including ours, provide blood testing as an additional, non-GMS service. Patients may opt to attend their local hospital for bloods at no charge, or they may choose to have them taken in the surgery as a private service.
At Marino Medical Centre, we offer this in surgery service with a reduced fee for GMS patients. GMS patients are charged €30 for non CDM bloods and bloods for a public consultant. And €50 for bloods for a private consultant. This fee helps us cover the clinical and administrative costs involved.
We understand unexpected charges can cause frustration, and we aim to be transparent about the limits of the GMS scheme and any additional services we provide.
